Antique Japanese Satsuma Lobed Bowl Signed Shuzan Meiji Period Birds and Flowers
This beautifully decorated Meiji period Japanese Satsuma bowl is marked for Shuzan and has a high-walled lobed form. The interior of the bowl is heavily gilded and features a pair of colorful birds resembling Japanese Golden Pheasants.

The birds are perched in a lush floral setting which includes peonies executed in shades of red, purple, blue, yellow and green. The area just beneath the rim on the inside has been finished with a wine-colored band bearing linear gilt accents while the rim itself is gilded.

The bowl is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The decoration is bright and vivid showing little-to-no sign of wear.

As an antique, the piece shows signs of age consisting of very fine crazing to the glaze. The bowl stands 2" tall and measures 5" across the rim. The gilt trimmed foot rim is 2 3/8 in diameter and the center bears a hand painted Shuzan mark. This lovely Japanese Meiji era bowl displays beautifully and would be a great addition to a collection of Satsuma.
